Blue Ridge
Highlands Regional Science Fair Awards
On Saturday, 20 March 2010, at New River Community
College in Dublin, Mount Tabor Ruritan Club members Dr. Mark Dallman and Dr. Keath
Marx participated in the 19th Annual Blue Ridge Highlands Regional Science Fair
as judges. In addition to other judging duties, they selected exhibitors
to receive awards presented by Mount Tabor Ruritan Club.
Each year the club presents four cash awards of $100
each during this science and engineering fair. Two awards are presented in the senior division (grades
9-12), two in the junior division (grades 7-8). Awards are presented to
each division in two categories for projects most directly applicable to
the local community.

Mark also volunteered as chair of the 8th grade
Biological Sciences judging team. Keath was assigned as chair of both
the senior division Engineering judging team and the Grand Award
selection team.
The Grand Award Winners are

Biyuan Zhao, a student at
Blacksburg High School and
SWVGS, presented original research titled "Construction of
Transgenic Aribidopsis for High-Throughput Screening to
Identify Mutants Involved in Xylem (Wood) Formation"

Alex Granata, another
Blacksburg High School and
SWVGS student, also presented original research, testing
"Hydrofoil Development for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles"
